I am giddy with excitement!!! Our Lakehouse Pam Kitty Morning fabrics arrived today!!! And, oh boy did they arrive lots and lots of it!! Can I just say "I LOVE her!!" I kind of stalk her, she is like the really cool kid at school that you want to hang with but your not quite cool enough. Lakehouse is a favorite at Material Girls. We have been waiting patiently for this to arrive. I want to sew something with it right now!! We were so busy at the shop tonight I couldn't even cut myself any of it! I hope I can sleep tonight, and of course I will be dreaming of all the things I will be making with this.

Time to finish this quilt!

I have had this quilt top laying around my sewing room for ever!! Today I decided I better do something with it. I can't decide if I should make it bigger, like King size or just throw a border on it and call it done at lap/twin size. This was actually going to be a quilt for Shelby when she turned 12, yikes she is now 20. She doesn't love the fabric. I made it in 30's which I love but she doesn't. I have a love of anything done with 30's fabric. I am out of the pink fabric for the setting squares so I would have to use something else. Hmmm, I am going to have to ponder this one. What would you guys do??

Scrap necklace tutorial

Today's tutorial is brought to you by Pinterest...are any of you surprised?
First I have to apologize for the picture. I have lost my camera so this is stolen from my facebook mobile uploads. If the camera appears I will update it to a better picture

Items needed
-scraps of material

I used 1/2 inch by width of fabric for my necklaces. The thicker the strip the more chunky your braid will be.
You need three strips for each necklace.
Sew three short ends together.
Braid - I hooked mine onto the edge of a table with an alligator clip so I could pull my braid tight.
When all braided sew the other ends together so your braid doesn't come undone
Repeat this 2 more times for the other 6 strips.

I draped the three necklaces around my neck to get the length I wanted and pinned each one.
Sew together where you have pinned.
You can then join all three together with a quick stitch or leave them separate.

Oh the possibilities. I used three colors, all the same for each necklace, but I have seen necklaces that are all different and they are adorable as well.

Wow, thanks for all the kind words this weekend. Shelby announced to the world (practically) that I had been on a diet, and had lost 30 lbs. Its true, I turn 50 (yikes!) this year and decided it was time to get myself healthy and stronger. I made a vow that I would go in for all my "gee, your getting old" tests, Colonoscopy, mammogram, you know the test that we all should get at a certain age but, put off. I am trying to walk everyday, (I hate to exercise,) so I bought myself a pedometer and walk 10,000 steps a day. This has been a journey and had its ups and downs. Losing weight and eating healthy is a lifestyle change, and yes, every once in a while I fall off and eat everything in sight. I am human!! So, here is to another 20lbs. and all those fun Dr.'s appointments!!

Washi Tape

Okay, I admit, I might have a slight problem. Tape? Really? I found this tape on Pinterest. It's called Washi Japanese masking tape. Sheesh!! I am not sure exactly what I am going to do with it yet but, I am sure I will figure something out. Oh, and I had to have that cute little tape dispenser too. I will keep you posted on what sort of projects I come up with. If any of you have suggestions, let me know.

I spy jar tutorial

Recently we had an event in my family that my husband wanted our son to witness, but at the same time it was a formal event so he needed to stay quiet and not show off his 18 month old lungs. This did the trick.

I spy jar

What you need
bottle with a screw on lid - I used a nalgene water bottle
small toys or objects - I put 12 in.
poly fill beads - found in the doll making section at my local craft store.
teflon tape

wash out the bottle and let dry
lay out toys and take a picture- print picture and laminate if desired
layer beads and toys
screw on lid tightly - My husband wrapped the threads in teflon tape (found in the plumbing section of home depot) This keeps the lid from unscrewing easily. An adult can unscrew it with force.

Let them shake all they want or give them the picture and tell them to find certain objects. The beads are quiet so this works as a quiet book alternative.

For the toys I found that the quarter machine toys and party favor toys are the perfect size. I did add a Lego man to each bottle just because my little one loves Legos. You can easily make this gender neutral or specific.

wreath tutorial

This wreath is a no sew project. Super easy. I did it during afternoon nap time.

What you need
A foam wreath
1 x 5 inch strips, lots of them. I used 2 charm packs cut into strips
small head pins
strip of felt for the back

Cut your strips, I used pinking shears so my edges had a little detail.
fold in half to make a loop
pin to the wreath. I pinned in rows and then filled in where it looked like a hole was
pin and pin and pin
Glue a piece of felt onto the back if desired.

You can probably glue the strips onto the wreath instead of pinning.

Mug Rug Obsession

I am completely obsessed with Mug Rugs. What is a mug rug, you ask? Well, it is like a little tiny quilt, that you use to set your mug (cup, glass, can, keg or what ever you may call) it on. In December my Yo-Yo Mama's group at the shop, exchanged them. It was so much fun!! I had a picture of everyones mug rug but for some reason I can't find it. This is a paper pieced mug rug by Very Kerry Berry. I bought it off her site. I am also in to paper piecing right now. Loving it!! If you haven't done a mug rug, its time.

Wreath tutorial

We at MG hope your holidays were fabulous.

This tutorial is a 2 parter. I was hoping to get done the second part in time, but the holidays were just to fun to ignore so here is the first part.

Cheap wreath.

Go to home depot and buy a length of pipe insulation it costs around $1 for six feet. At my home depot it was in the isle with the furnace filters. They are long grey foam tubes with a slit in them. They come in six foot sections. Gently bend the tube until you get the size wreath you want. Then cut and tape the ends together. I used Scotch heavy duty packing tape. You have a wreath for cheap.

Be aware there are different widths of the insulation. The thinner ones work better for smaller wreaths, but the thicker ones work for larger wreaths. if you want a 12" standard size go with thinner. The thicker one folded in on me.

It is available in the shop, and online soon (we also have kits for boy and girls). I am so impressed with her mad skills, she has been designing all kinds of cute things! It is so nice to have a daughter that loves to quilt!!

Insul-Bright tutorial

There is a product on the market that is more useful than I ever imagined. It is called Insul-bright. It is an insulated interfacing. Picture batting with a layer of aluminum foil. I Love this stuff. You can use it in place of interfacing and make any bag into a insulated tote. It can also be used in hot pot holder, ironing board covers, mittens, hats and jackets. The ideas are endless and it really does work.

We have it at the shop behind the counter so just ask one of the girls. It does come on the bolt so make sure you know how much you will need.

The bag above is the camille tote using insul bright and laminated fabric for a lunch bag. This is a model at the shop if you want to touch and feel how the insul bright turns out.

Tom's makeover

White Tom's

Okay, another Pinterest craft. If you know me you know I always wear some type of tennie runners. Shelby bought me a pair of Toms for my birthday and I have loved them!! I have worn them out. So, after searching Pinterest I came across a couple of re-do's and decided to do mine!! So here is my version of the redo. I don't have pictures for all of the steps, I didn't have my camera it was at the shop.

*First I patched all of the holes, I just cut out little squares of Pellon's Stacey 101 (this is a type of interfacing I use on everything.) I ironed it on to the holes with just my regular iron but should have used my little itty bitty iron.

Fabric Tac

*I decided which fabrics to use, and where. Make sure you have lots of fabric don't skimp. I started with the toe. I used Fabric Tac glue (it is my favorite! I use it for everything) You can buy it at your local craft store. I covered the toe area, making sure to get along the sole, I turned under a scant bit on the edge that would be joining with the next piece of fabric along the sides. Smooth it out working all creases out to the toe area, I then trimmed with a little pair of scissors along the edge of the sole.

I then chose my next fabric and coverd the are with the Fabri-Tac. Don't put the glue over the elastic. Smooth out and then trim where needed. I then started with my next piece of fabric, and covered it in glue and worked it around. Where the Tom tag is I made sure I didn't glue that down. Make sure you are gluing alot down by the sole and smoothing it out.

I picked off with my seam ripper the Tom tag on the back. Cut my fabric to fit just that little square glued it on and then added the Tom tag back.

I added a 1" strip of fabric around the top edge of the shoe, and then added a rick rack trim across the toe. You could get really creative and add lace, buttons and all kinds of things.
A few things I learned is make sure you stuff the toe area so that you have a smoother surface. It will shrink your shoe a little but my stretched back our after I had worn them a bit. I went to Nordstrom after and several people commented on them, and the shoe sales girl loved them!!

Tea cup upcycle

Hi my name is Chriss, and I am addicted to Pinterest.

This is my latest Pinterest inspired project. I made if from my wedding china, but I also have a mix and match set of cups and plates I will be doing another one from. I used a dinner plate on the bottom, a dessert plate in the middle and a saucer on top for a tiered affect.

The only issue I ran into was my glue. The tutorial I read said to use super glue...it did not work. What did work for me is Epoxy. I got Locktite 5 min self mixing epoxy. You can find it in the glue section at Home depot, which is near the paint. It sets up in 5 minutes and holds fabulously.

Just run a little line of epoxy around the edge of the cup (either bottom or top) and stick to appropriate side of the plate. I let mine sit overnight to really set up and you are done. Fast, Fabulous and Fun!!!!

Blend fabrics

We have a new fabric line at the shop. The fabrics are printed by BLEND fabrics. All the lines are adorable. The shop currently has an a boy line, and as the mother of an 18 month old boy, I have gone hog wild making things. The Dino line is my favorite, but they all will be making an appearance in my house.

Most of you out there know I hate to cook, bake, or anything that has to do with the kitchen!! I am not sure why....... if it is lack of recipes, never learned properly, or what but I hate it. I joke with my friends that my next house won't have a kitchen just a fridge and a microwave. But, all that has changed since being introduced to Pinterest and checking everyones pins, I WANT TO COOK!! Sheesh!! go figure! I was off today and decided to try a casserole, I have been cleaning and decorating for Christmas and wanted something fast. Welcome the cutting edge of ordinary blog!! yo yo pushpin tutorial

What you need
fabric
flat head push pin
embellishment

Make a yo yo. I used the smallest (green) yo yo maker
before you have close the yo yo up push the pin into the flat bottom

finish closing and secure.
embellish with beads and buttons - or leave plain

You can also glue a round magnet into the yo yo to make a magnet instead of a push pin.

When is too early for Christmas?

The big debate is when is it too early for Christmas to be up and out in retail stores. What is your take on this? If you are a quilter or a stitcher we need to start these projects early in order to finish them. As a shop owner, I can say we receive most of our Holiday fabrics in June, yes I said June. We don't put ours out until July, and usually don't have models up until at least August, maybe September. I do and try and get all of my shopping done before Thanksgiving. That way I can focus on any last minute sewing, relaxing, and just enjoying the Season. I love Christmas music and usually drive everyone nuts with my "Donny and Marie" Christmas music. I would love to hear your thoughts on this so leave me a note tell me what you think. Oh and remember "Be Nice" Santa's watching you:)

Sewing jar tutorial

I went to a late sew the other night and thought what a pain it was to pack up all my "tools" to take with. I wish I had a container that I could just through in my travel bag and go. After a little research and thinking this what will be in my travel bag...I am even buying stuff to just leave in here so I don't forget anything...like my seam ripper which is my best friend.

Need
mason jar - any size
Lid - ring and sealing disk
cardboard
fabric scrap
stuffing

Trace the sealing disk onto cardboard and cut out
lay sealing disk onto fabric and cut out 1 inch bigger
sandwich fabric, stuffing cardboard together and stuff into lid ring
glue fabric tails onto bottom of cardboard
push sealing disk in (glue to cardboard if you want)
fill jar with desired bits.

These also make a perfect gift for those sewers in you life.

I am loving all the Subway Art out there in cyber-land. I could never figure out how to do it myself but I found a lot of great bloggers out there that are sharing theirs for free. Washer necklace tutorial

We talked about these at the ghoul-friends night out. Since my husband is mister fix it and these are made out of washers I had to do them and enlist his help. They were easier than I thought, cheaper than I planned, but the drying time was longer than stated on the bottle. I made mine into a bag charm, but I hve seen them as necklaces and bracelets as well.

What you need
- a stainless steel washer---size doesn't matter just get what you like
-spray adhesive
-pencil or fabric pen
-cord of your choice...or even ribbon
-embellishments for cord if you want
-scrap of fabric
-bottle of glossy accents - sold in the stamp area of joanns or micheals

--trace your washer onto your fabric, both outside and inside hole
--cut out both
--spray washer with adhesive and place fabric on the washer
--squeeze a thin line of resin along the outer and inner edge
--fill in between the lines--the thicker a cost of resin the longer it takes to dry but the more 3d it will be.
if the resin starts to fall over the edge I just ran a q-tip along the edge to clean up while wet.
--let dry (mine was over night)
--thread your cording through, embellish and tie off
DONE and let the ohh and ahhing begin!!

---I did read on the internet you can speed up drying time by heating the resin from below...I have not tried this so try at your own risk.

Fall Wreath for Ghouls Night

This is the wreath we made at our "Ghouls Night Out" We used Burlap for our wreath and then embellished it. We love Burlap at Material Girls. We had another project planned for the night too but after all of our laughing, eating and whatnot we only had time to finish the wreath. This is a QR code. WHAT?? How you get this to work is you download a QR code reader app for your phone or other devices that has a camera. You line the 3 squares up with the view finder provided with the app and click. The code will then take you to whatever information is stored in the bar code. Ours is our website. Others I have seen are videos, pictures, information. I promise you will see these popping up everywhere. We at MG at just ahead of the curve...for once.

I am seriously doing my happy dance moves right now (and I am telling you I can bust a move!). Ruby by (Moda) Bonnie and Camille, mother~daughter duo whom I loooove to pieces, arrived at the shop. It is Fanfreakintastic!! I love it, and so will you. Reds, Aqua's, greens mmmm! need I say more? We have the entire line and then some, and of course all the pre-cuts. Pj bottoms in VOILE!!

In the world of fabric I think voile means love. If you haven't sewn with this fabric before you need to. Voile is a lighter weight with a silky feeling. It is still cotton based but so much more yummy. Even though voile is thinner, I have had no issues with snagging or fraying. It sews up just as well as regular weight cotton. There are multiple fabric color choices of voile at the shop. With more coming in. I have made several projects out of it...skirts, scarves, tops, but my hands down favorite are my voile PJ bottoms. OH COMFINESS!! It is easily replaced with any other fabric, I would however not use it as your main fabric in a bag. Stop by and grab some. You wont be disappointed.
Th Pj bottoms are a pattern out of the "in stitches" book by Amy Butler, which we have in the store.

Applique tutorial

First--sorry for no tutorial last week. There was an issue with the blog and it took a couple of days to fix.

Second - For the next few weeks the tutorials are going to be addressing the basics.
This tutorial will be addressing raw edge applique.

What you need
design of you choice - anything works in this area
material - large enough for your design and another piece for your background
fusible web- such as wonder under or heat and bond
pencil - for tracing

1- trace design onto the paper side of your web.

2-iron design onto the wrong side of chosen fabric

3-cut out design

4-peel off paper backing

5-iron design onto right side of background fabric

6-finish the edges. You can hand stitch or machine stitch. Zig zag or decorative...the choice is yours.

Bag ladies

This is just a quick note about the current pattern...If you have a nook color you need to add a 1/2 inch to the main piece for the cover. pattern says 8 1/2 by 11 1/2 you will need it to be 9 x 11 1/2. The nook color is 1/2 inch taller than the kindle is the reason for this.

I mentioned last week about a bag of the month club. After a chitty chat with boss lady we have come to an announcement. LET THE BAG MAKING BEGIN!!!

Here is the scoop. The response has been awesome. But lots of it has come from our online friends. So with that we have decided to make this an online group with meetings quarterly, not really meetings but more like chat fest.

We will still choose to make a bag each month, but instead of meeting up to show our creations you will email a picture of them to me and we will post them online. We will set a deadline for pictures to be in by and the post of pictures will be up that day. Also the next pattern will be announced in that same post.

This is where I need your guys opinion. Would you prefer a blog page to post pictures or a facebook page? Leave a comment or shoot an email to the address below to let me know.

Hooded towel Tutorial

my child is a chunky monkey. And due to this "baby" sized stuff doesn't work for him. The major one being baby towels. So here is a quick and easy tutorial on hooded towel you can use from infant to toddler---or you on those days you want to bundle up after a warm shower.

needed

1 - hand towel

1-bath towel

--Cut hand towel in half

-Finish cut edge - serge or zig zag

--folded the short end together to form a point. This should be the opposite of the cut end

--Using a short stitch length (1.5) but a wide zig zag (4) sew the two edges together. MAKE sure to catch both edges of the towel in your stitches.

--You should now have a point

--Center the point piece onto the long side of your towel...this is sewn to the "outside" so if you want a certain side out when you wrap it make sure that side is facing up in this step.

--pin in place.

--Zig Zag the three edges of the point piece. Then straight stitch along the edge of the towel. This attatchs and secures the point piece and towel together.

--Embellish as desired--mine are plain cause my little one pulls everything off that I put on.

DONE!! Now time for a bath!!

Hi there, this is Chriss. If you dont know me I am the bag lady from Material Girls. If there is a bag pattern out there I MUST have it. You have probably seen me in the shop, I have a little boy that the girls haul around (without much opposition from his mom) I was feeling a little left out cause I am not a quilter. I prefer "3D projects". So with the boss lady's blessing I am throwing together a monthly group.

- We will make a bag each month. The pattern will be the same for all but the fabric is your choice.

-When we meet the following month bring your bag and let the fun and idea swapping being. We will then announce the new pattern.

-Discount will be given on the chosen bag pattern to those in the group.

-At some of the monthly meetings we will have demos.

Dresdan Plate Tutorial

Dresdan plates terrify me. I avoided them like the plague no matter how cute the project was. I then got myself into a situation that I agreed to do a quilt and it had 1/4 plate corners. OH NO!! They ended up being super easy. Easy and fabulous looking? SIGN ME UP

First - At the store we have multiple templates for dresdans. All different sizes, but the concept is the same. I used the smallest for picture purposes. Some patterns come with the pattern template for you (like the quilt I did)

Scarps of fabric - amount will depend on size. This small one calls for 5 inch strips.
Template

--Cut fabric with template to chosen size

--Sew 1/4 seam along top straight edge

--Snip corner
--push point through - my template came with a pusher, but scissors or chopsticks work well too

--press

--repeat until you have enough - pattern/directions will tell you how many you need to make a complete circle.
--Sew the points together along long edges.
--Stitch onto back ground fabric.
--Finish center with a circle. I appliqued mine on

DONE!! See that was easy huh

Rolled Rosette tutorial

We have a new product in the shop. It is called Glubers. Think of glue dot but for fabric. The package shows and instructs how to use them for rolled rosette flowers, but I have used them with other types of flower and yo-yos.

Using them is fabulous. No burnt fingers from hot glue, perfect circles each time, and the double sided sticky helps hold the flower in place while you stitch it onto your project.

There are multiple sizes of dots.
